In the trucking industry, proactive compliance is the only way to operate profitably. Just as you meticulously maintain compliance for your Breath Alcohol Technician and DNA collection protocols, your administrative house must be in perfect order before the FMCSA flips the switch on their new technology.
As a follow-up to the launch of Motus: the U.S. DOT Registration System, the FMCSA has released a time-sensitive bulletin detailing exactly how motor carriers must prepare their legacy accounts for the transition.
If you do not prepare your existing FMCSA Portal account, you will not be able to claim your Motus account, potentially halting your ability to update your registration or operating status.
The FMCSA has instructed all motor carriers to take the following four actions immediately:
1. Verify Your Account Status Log into your existing FMCSA Portal account (portal.fmcsa.dot.gov) to confirm it is still active. Note: The FMCSA automatically disables accounts after 90 days of inactivity and archives them after 12 months. If your account is locked, you must contact the FMCSA Contact Center to restore access.
2. Locate Your USDOT PIN (If you are a new user) If you do not currently have a legacy Portal account, you must create one to transition to Motus. You will need your USDOT PIN to access your information, which can be retrieved at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov.
3. Audit Your Company Information Once inside the Portal, verify that all of your operational data is entirely accurate. This includes your company information, operation classification, contact information, and the specific individuals authorized to access your record. You can make these updates exactly as you would a Biennial Update (Navigate to the “Registration” tab and select “Biennial Update (MCS-150)”).
4. The Crucial Step: Email Matching This is the most important technical requirement for the transition: Only the FMCSA Portal Company Official using the exact same FMCSA Portal Login.gov email will be permitted to claim an account in Motus for the first time. If your login.gov email does not match the official email on file in the legacy portal, your linkage will fail. Once your account is successfully linked to Motus, you will manage all future registration changes in the new system and will no longer need the legacy portal.
Do not let an archived account or a mismatched email address disrupt your operations. Audit your portal access today to ensure a seamless transition.
