5/19/2026: FMCSA Urgent Update

As an industry, we are highly familiar with navigating strict DOT-compliant protocols—from maintaining tight scheduling for CPC urine and oral drug testing to ensuring our drivers are fit for the road. Now, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is bringing that same level of rigorous, zero-tolerance verification to the very foundation of how motor carriers register to operate.

On May 19, 2026, the Department of Transportation officially rolled out Motus: the U.S. DOT Registration System.

Designed to replace a fragmented, decades-old IT infrastructure, Motus is a direct strike against fraud, waste, and the persistent issue of “chameleon” carriers—bad actors who shed negative safety records only to spin up new corporate identities under the old, lax registration system.

On May 19, 2026, the Department of Transportation officially rolled out Motus: the U.S. DOT Registration System.

What Does Motus Change?

The days of registering a motor carrier with nothing more than a name, an email, and a physical address are over. To suffocate fraud at the point of entry, the new Motus dashboard integrates mandatory, high-level identity verification protocols, including:

  • Government-Issued ID Verification

  • Digital Facial Scans (Biometrics)

  • Robust Third-Party Business Validation

According to FMCSA Administrator Derek D. Barrs, this modernized platform will collapse the agency’s old data silos into a single, secure digital dashboard. For legitimate fleets and forwarders, this means the entire lifecycle—from initial filing to biennial updates—will now be a streamlined, mobile-friendly process.

What You Need To Do Right Now

While Motus is designed to make regulatory compliance more intuitive for honest motor carriers, it does require a specific entry key.

To access Motus for any registration activities, you must have a login.gov account.

Crucial Step: If you already have access to the legacy FMCSA Portal via login.gov, the FMCSA mandates that you must use that exact same account to ensure all your existing data transfers and remains available to you in the new system.

Protect your fleet’s administrative workflow by ensuring your login credentials are up to date before your next required filing.
